Drive Impactful Research

Our goals

  1. Develop high quality research focusing on areas that amplify SMU's strengths
  2. Develop global and local research partnerships
  3. Put sustainability ideas into practice on campus

What we have done

  • Identified 5 sustainability research pillars - Sustainable Business Operations; Sustainable Urban Infrastructure; Sustainable Finance and Impact Assessment; Sustainable Agro-businesses and Food Consumption; Sustainable Ageing and Wellbeing.
  • Inked partnerships with University of Toronto and Singapore University of Technology and Design to collaborate on research related to topics on urban migration, belonging and thriving; electric vehicle mobility patterns and impact on urban heat; shared mobility for passengers and logistics; and impact of shared mobility on carbon emissions.
  • Conducted MAKER (Multi-disciplinary And Knowledge Exchange Research) workshops, bringing together SMU faculty with researchers and practitioners from academia, government, businesses and non-governmental organisations for informal, focused discussions on common topics of interest.
  • Launched a periodic series on sustainability with our Asian Management Insights publication.
  • Published online booklets showcasing sustainability research at SMU.
  • Implemented 2 living lab projects on campus.
  • Developed metrics to track research impact across the sustainability research pillars and the UN SDGs.
