Campus

Since inception, SMU has been committed to creating a clean, green, and healthy environment for our community. We are also shifting our community towards green behaviours through dedicated awareness and behaviour change initiatives.

Climate Action

Bold action is needed to tackle the climate crisis affecting our health and livelihoods, and biodiversity. At SMU, not only are we committed to putting our teaching and research to address global climate change issues, we also strive to reduce our carbon footprint and manage climate risks to our operations.

Responsible Consumption and Production

Our planet is running out of resources to sustain current lifestyles and our growing population. We promote the transition to a circular economy and more sustainable lifestyles by looking at how our University can consume less; reuse, refurbish and recyle our resources; and encourage the use of products and services with lower environmental and social impacts.

Campus as a Living Lab

Our living lab platform provides students, faculty, staff and industry partners with the opportunity to utilise the campus to collaborate on and explore real-world problems, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The campus becomes a vehicle for real-world experimentation and incubator for sustainability, enabling the knowledge translation and co-creation of sustainability solutions for societal impact.

Living Lab projects

CS-Light

A smart lighting control system that was test-bedded on campus, CS-Light demonstrated significant reduction in energy consumption while maintaining occupant comfort in buildings with open-floor layouts.

Cool paints

A project to assess the efficacy of cool paints in mitigating Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects through the deployment of micro-scale sensors and remote sensing platforms, is underway on campus and across selected Singapore schools.
