Education
SMU aims to prepare students as future sustainability leaders and active global citizens through transformative education and holistic learning experiences. By unpacking what it means to be active global citizens, graduates can develop the skills and knowledge necessary to create a sustainable future for all.
Sustainability Education Framework
Our initiatives are guided by SMU’s Sustainability Education Framework, which offers opportunities for foundational, intermediate, and advanced mastery of sustainability issues. We believe an understanding of sustainability issues is instrumental to becoming engaged global citizens and this is reflected in the Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLOs) for SMU students. A set of rubrics based on the GLO of "Understanding of Sustainability Issues" outlines 7 dimensions of sustainability education to serve as a common framework, shared vision, and assessment for instructors and learners. SMU undergraduates are also expected to fulfil graduation criteria on sustainability, with those enrolling from AY2024 onwards having to achieve intermediate mastery through the completion of at least one sustainability focused course.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education
SMU offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduates and postgraduates to learn about sustainability in the classroom as well as apply their knowledge on real-world challenges through collaborations with external organisations, on-the-job training, and community service projects and volunteerism. Our students and alumni attest to transformational learning experiences at SMU.
Lifelong Learning
Learning at every stage of life is critical for continued relevance in a rapidly evolving world and economy. We provide courses and programmes catered to the needs of adult learners and professionals, empowering them with the practical knowledge and skills needed to seize opportunities in the future green economy and make meaningful contributions to society.
To inculcate the importance of continuous learning, full-time students at SMU are offered free taster course with the SMU Academy and the University keeps in close contact with alumni to understand what courses they may need as they advance in their careers.
