Sustainable Finance

We are committed to supporting the transition to a more environmentally and socially responsible future by aligning our capital raising efforts with projects that generate positive sustainability outcomes for the campus and broader community.

Sustainable Financing Framework

In June 2025, we launched our inaugural Sustainable Financing Framework, developed in collaboration with OCBC, our sole sustainability advisor, recognised for its strong track record in supporting industry transition through strategic advisory and targeted financing solutions. The Framework provides the foundation for SMU to engage in sustainable finance transactions, such as green, social, and sustainability bonds and loans, with the projects and expenditures defined in the Framework aligned to 9 focus areas:

  • Green buildings
  • Information and communications technology
  • Energy efficiency
  • Renewable energy
  • Clean transportation
  • Pollution prevention, control and circular economy
  • Sustainable water and wastewater management
  • Climate change adaptation
  • Access to essential services

The Framework received a Second Party Opinion from Moody’s Ratings, affirming its alignment with internationally recognised standards and its significant contribution to sustainable outcomes.

Sustainability Bond 2025

SMU intends to raise S$150 million through its inaugural sustainability bond issuance in July 2025. The proceeds will be used to finance or refinance green buildings and social projects that deliver clear environmental and social benefits, in line with the priority areas outlined in SMU’s Sustainable Financing Framework.

Sustainability Reporting

Since the 2018/19 edition, SMU has documented its sustainability efforts and progress in a dedicated section of its Annual Reports. In 2024, this commitment was further strengthened with the publication of SMU’s first standalone Sustainability Report. Allocation and impact reporting related to our sustainable finance transactions will be incorporated into our annual sustainability report from the 2025/26 edition to be published in September 2026.
